Increasing and Measuring Employee Engagement

This is one of the most asked questions I’m asked in my business. How do we increase and/or measure engagement? And, do I have a training module for it? It's a crucial metric that can significantly impact your organisation's success. Imagine your vital service providers, such as Doctors, Dentists, Surgeons, Solicitors, or Builders, working at only 50% capacity while being paid their full fee!

Engaged employees are the lifeblood of any thriving organisation, and understanding their level of engagement is vital to your business's growth and prosperity.

But how do you truly gauge their engagement?

It's a challenging task, and behaviour can often be hard to measure until it's too late – when the employee decides to leave. While exit interviews may provide some insights, relying solely on them isn't sufficient.

To maximise long-term outcomes, I strongly recommend adopting a prevention-based approach. This approach requires year-round planning and effort but yields far better results.

As a Leader, it's your responsibility to champion employee engagement, keeping it top of mind and consistently proving its value throughout the year.

Here are five powerful ways to enhance employee engagement and create a culture that fosters loyalty and productivity

1. Champion Strengths: Discover what aspects of the current culture employees enjoy and find innovative ways to amplify those values both internally and externally. For instance, if employees appreciate access to external training a few times a year, consider expanding such opportunities to fuel their growth further. Highlight this when recruiting new talent.

2. Highlight Areas of Opportunity: Foster transparency by openly discussing organisational weaknesses and encourage employees to be part of the improvement process. By involving them in finding solutions, you make them feel valued and appreciated.

3. Share Feedback: Create an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions, even if they're critical. Demonstrating that their voices matter positively impacts company culture and fosters open communication.

4. Showcase Engaging Success Stories: Inspire creativity by showcasing how others have successfully embraced unique engagement strategies. Encourage employees to follow suit, leading to a culture of sharing innovative ideas. Never shoot down an idea – you want to encourage people to speak up.

5. Tie Engagement Efforts to Business Outcomes: Demonstrate the direct impact of a positive culture on achieving business objectives and personal goals. Highlight how engagement contributes to staff retention and advancement opportunities.

There's a strong correlation between employee engagement and retention. When employees feel a sense of belonging and actively contribute to a successful team, they are more likely to stay, grow, and learn within the organisation. Emphasising engagement in your workplace culture not only boosts productivity but also reinforces your organisation as an employer of choice.

Remember, investing in employee engagement is investing in your organisation's future success. So, take charge, make a difference, and uncover the potential of your workforce by measuring and continuously enhancing employee engagement.
